Spotlight on R. Corey Grove, J.D., CPCU, Vice President, Underwriting and Client Services

Few at BETA Healthcare Group—or in the healthcare liability insurance business—have the 360-degree vantage and depth of experience as Corey Grove. After earning his J.D. in 1995, he worked as a professional liability representative in BETA’s claims department, a role that provided him a front-line view of how claims develop and are resolved. From there, he joined the marketing group—an area that was eventually combined with underwriting; he has led the group since 2004.

A core part of Corey’s role as a member of BETA’s senior leadership team is to be the eyes and ears of customers and the market. His team has direct responsibility for ensuring that all members and brokers understand the products and services BETA offers and how coverage can be appropriately priced and tailored to meet their needs. Without that service and coverage, members would face greater liability risk.

Corey’s leadership efforts are focused on understanding market shifts, anticipating changes and, with the help of his team, designing new products that address the needs and risk exposures confronting healthcare providers. With the Affordable Care Act serving as the catalyst for healthcare mergers, partnerships and affiliations, healthcare organizations are growing, and their greater appetite for risk requires different insurance products and services. In many instances, these market consolidations have reduced the number of entities that need traditional primary insurance. That’s part of Corey’s role—to work with senior leadership to analyze these shifts and identify BETA’s role in the market.

As the healthcare industry continues to change—the current push across state lines by many healthcare providers is just one example—it will be Corey and the BETA team who examine what those changes mean and determine how best to respond with the right policies, programs and services.

Corey graduated magna cum laude from San Diego State University with a B.A. in political science and from Western State University College of Law in San Diego with a J.D. He also holds Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter and Associate in Risk Management professional designations.
