Sepsis is a common cause of maternal morbidity and mortality in the pregnant patient. Early identification and treatment of sepsis in the nonpregnant population is well defined and has implications for care of the pregnant patient. Causes of sepsis in pregnancy and the approach to management are reviewed. We also address the challenges of early recognition of sepsis in a pregnant patient.
Objectives:
- Discuss common causes of sepsis in pregnancy
- Discuss management approach for the septic pregnant patient
- Review the role of sepsis bundles to guide therapy
