The Obstetrical Patient Safety Initiative was developed to improve patient safety in labor and delivery and decrease your risk of lawsuits. Hospitals demonstrating 100 percent compliance with all elements by June 30, 2010 will receive a 5 percent rate credit on their 2010 renewal.
The Obstetrical Patient Safety Initiative includes the following elements and is applicable to all physicians, family practitioners, residents, midwives and nurses:
use of current National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) nomenclature in all documentation and communication of findings describing the fetal status utilizing the updated language
evidence of fetal heart rate monitoring interpretation competency by clinicians
multidisciplinary learning and fostering of team collaboration as evidenced by, at minimum, monthly fetal strip reviews
