Risk Management: Neonatal Encephalopathy: The Link Between Cause and Effect
July 2010
This informative webinar will explore the issues related to cerebral palsy and its development. We will review the pathophysiology and causal links between antenatal, intrapartum and post birth events in the development of cerebral palsy. In addition, we will explore the role of cord blood gas as a potential trigger for long-term effects as well as the value of placental analysis in defense of potential claims that arise from encephalopathy.
Objectives
Define and distinguish hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), periventricular leukomalacia, and cerebral palsy.
Clarify the causal link between antenatal, intrapartum, and postbirth events with respect to the development of cerebral palsy.
Discuss the criteria within which this diagnosis may be made.
Review the recent literature review and compilation with respect to cord gas relationship and the potential to use this tool as a trigger for the development of long-term effects.
Share the value of placental pathology in the diagnosis of various causal events
